2006. This is as far as I can remember obsessively capturing photos of inspiring or funny graffiti quotes in London. Way before I became a street photographer.
Graffiti and street art are ephemeral, they do not last. They brighten our day and disguise the depressing concrete walls of our capital.
(Be aware the F word is common throughout the following photos)
When I began my decade + journey into London urban photography, it was all about graffiti. I would go out and walk half marathons around London every weekend to capture new (art) pieces freshly sprayed on those depressing grey concrete walls. The same walls many describe as vandalised when someone adds a little colour…
Now 14 years later, I’ve decided to compile all my photos of London graffiti in a folder. So far, I’ve covered 2006 to 2014 and have a file that’s 10gb, some 2500 photos of graffiti and street art. Yes, I can get a little obsessive with things I enjoy.
As I browse through these ephemeral pieces of (what at times is) straight-up art, of London and of the social climate at the time, some stand out, they are what I call positive graffiti messages or inspiring or funny graffiti quotes. The ones you see in the street which speak to you. Even a “f*ck you” can at times motivate you to kickass that day!
